In a significant step toward modernizing its financial ecosystem and exploring the potential of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is moving forward with plans to develop and test a dollar-pegged digital currency. This initiative aims to create a stable, blockchain-based digital asset whose value would be directly linked to the US Dollar, offering a potential new tool for enhancing cross-border transactions, remittances, and financial inclusion.

The project, reportedly in the exploratory and development phase, is part of the SBP’s broader digital finance strategy to keep pace with global financial innovations. A dollar-pegged digital currency could provide a more efficient, transparent, and lower-cost alternative for international trade settlements and for the millions of overseas Pakistanis sending remittances home, potentially reducing reliance on traditional correspondent banking networks.
While details on the technical architecture and timeline for a pilot project remain under wraps, the move signals Pakistan’s serious intent to engage with transformative financial technologies. The SBP is expected to collaborate with international technology partners, financial institutions, and regulatory experts to design a secure and compliant framework. The initiative would be distinct from a sovereign Pakistani Rupee-based CBDC, focusing instead on creating a stablecoin-like instrument under central bank oversight.
“The exploration of a dollar-pegged digital currency reflects our proactive approach to financial innovation,” stated a senior SBP official. “Our objective is to understand how such technologies can improve efficiency, reduce costs in our external sector, and provide new, secure digital channels for our citizens and businesses, all within a robust regulatory perimeter that ensures stability and protects consumers.”
The development will be closely watched by the global fintech community and could position Pakistan as an early adopter of regulated digital asset innovation among emerging markets.
