OGDC Revives Attock's Jand-1 Well, Tripling Gas Output to Over 21 MMSCFD

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (PSX: OGDC) has successfully revived gas production from the Jand-1 well in Attock District, Punjab, with output now exceeding 21 MMSCFD , a threefold jump from its previous level of around 7.0 MMSCFD. The development highlights OGDC’s strategy of maximizing value from existing assets through technical expertise.

Challenging Conditions Overcome

Jand-1 was originally brought into production in 2019 via the Dakhni Gas Processing Plant but had been shut down due to mechanical failure caused by a highly corrosive sour gas environment, with hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) concentrations running as high as 8% (~80,000 ppm) . The highly corrosive environment had caused mechanical failure, necessitating the well’s shutdown.

Technical Revival Operation

The revival operation involved the safe retrieval of downhole materials and full restoration of well integrity under these challenging conditions. The well has since been recompleted with corrosion-resistant tubing designed for sour service to ensure long-term, safe operations. The entire operation was executed by OGDC’s in-house technical team, demonstrating the company’s engineering capabilities.

Strategic Significance

OGDC stated that the development highlights its strategy of maximizing value from existing assets through technical expertise, with the added benefit of strengthening domestic hydrocarbon supply. The successful revival adds significantly to Pakistan’s domestic gas production, reducing reliance on imported energy.

About Oil and Gas Development Company

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (PSX: OGDC) is Pakistan’s largest exploration and production company, with a diverse portfolio of assets across the country. The company is majority-owned by the Government of Pakistan and plays a leading role in the nation’s energy sector.

About Sour Gas

Sour gas contains hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), a highly corrosive and toxic compound. Production from sour gas reservoirs requires specialized equipment, including corrosion-resistant tubing and materials, to ensure safe and reliable operations. The Jand-1 well’s H₂S concentration of 8% (~80,000 ppm) is considered extremely high, making the revival operation particularly challenging.
