July 9, 2026 – Pakistan’s livestock population has grown at an impressive rate over the last 18 years, with the total number of animals now standing at over 190 million, compared to around 100 million in 2006. This near doubling of the herd size highlights the growing importance of the livestock sector in feeding the nation and supporting millions of rural families. The steady rise in animal numbers reflects the sector’s strength and its ability to meet the increasing demand for milk, meat, and other animal products.

Livestock now contributes nearly 60% to Pakistan’s agricultural output and accounts for roughly 11% of the country’s total GDP, making it one of the most valuable sectors of the economy. Several factors have driven this expansion, including greater demand for dairy and meat products, better healthcare for animals, and the introduction of improved breeding techniques. Farmers have also benefited from government programs that provide veterinary support and promote modern farming practices.
Pakistan is now among the world’s top five producers of buffalo, cattle, and goats. The sector provides jobs and income to more than 8 million rural households across the country. With continued government focus on boosting exports, particularly to Gulf countries and Southeast Asia, the livestock industry is expected to play an even bigger role in Pakistan’s economic future.
