United Bank Limited (UBL), Pakistan’s largest financial institution by deposits, announced three national development initiatives on Wednesday, committing up to PKR 40 billion toward high-impact socio-economic sectors. To transform Pakistan’s farming value chain, UBL is launching a dedicated agricultural subsidiary backed by up to PKR 8 billion in capital. This new venture will deliver an integrated ecosystem for farmers by combining research and development, tech-driven advisory services, direct market access, and modern supply chain solutions alongside affordable financing. By addressing critical operational bottlenecks, the subsidiary aims to boost farm productivity, elevate rural incomes, and enhance national food security.
Addressing higher education, UBL has pledged PKR 10 billion toward establishing a university in Pakistan, a figure matched by the Bestway Foundation to create a combined funding pool of PKR 20 billion. Designed as an international center of excellence for teaching, research, and leadership development, the proposed institution aims to foster global competitiveness while nurturing local talent.
Concurrently, UBL is allocating up to PKR 22 billion to recapitalize Khushhali Microfinance Bank (KMBL) following severe financial distress that left the lender with a negative equity of PKR 16.15 billion at year-end 2025. This targeted capital injection stabilizes KMBL’s balance sheet, restores market confidence, and preserves vital micro-credit access for underserved demographics. “These initiatives represent strategic investments in Pakistan’s future by strengthening three of its most important pillars — education, financial market stability, and agriculture,” stated Muhammad Jawaid Iqbal, President & CEO of UBL.
