Pakistan has called for a greater private-sector role to boost D-8 economic integration, urging member states to deepen business-to-business engagement and joint ventures across the bloc. Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan made the appeal during the 4th meeting of the D-8 Trade Ministerial Council in Cairo. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening economic cooperation among Developing-8 countries.

The minister emphasized that regional alliances are essential for ensuring stability and sustained growth. He cited rising protectionism, climate-related disruptions, and supply chain uncertainties as key challenges. He also welcomed Azerbaijan’s accession as the grouping’s ninth member, calling its inclusion a boost to the bloc’s economic potential.
Khan underscored the central role of the private sector in driving economic integration. He urged greater B2B cooperation, joint ventures, and technology sharing where D-8 economies complement each other. He stressed the importance of creating an enabling environment supported by policy stability, information access, and financial facilitation.
The minister highlighted the D-8 Preferential Trade Agreement as a key instrument for boosting intra-bloc trade. He called for its full and effective implementation. Pakistan remains committed to resolving operational issues and harmonising documentation to make the agreement fully functional.
Pakistan signed the D-8 Protocol on Dispute Settlement Mechanism during the Cairo session. This marks an important step toward institutional strengthening of the organization. Khan also called for stronger institutional linkages in customs, standardization, mutual recognition, and logistics connectivity.
He stressed that efficient transport corridors and digital integration are vital for smooth regional trade. Recognizing the rapid expansion of digital trade, the minister urged member states to invest in digital infrastructure and cross-border e-commerce. Pakistan stands ready to collaborate on fintech, digital payments, and strengthening innovation networks across the bloc.
The minister identified food security, textiles, agriculture, energy, and technological innovation as priority areas for joint work. These sectors align with sustainable development goals and offer significant potential for regional cooperation.
