The federal government is considering importing approximately one million tonnes of wheat after provincial demand exceeded available public-sector stocks. The proposal emerged during a high-level Wheat Board meeting chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, who reviewed wheat availability, distribution plans, and provincial requirements.

According to officials, the proposed import aims to ensure uninterrupted wheat supplies and strengthen national food security. The government stated that the import quantity reflects the requirements submitted by the provinces. Moreover, authorities pledged to consult provincial governments on quality specifications and ensure transparent distribution based on regional demand.
The development marks a shift from earlier government assessments, which maintained that domestic wheat stocks were sufficient following an above-target harvest. However, recent reviews found that provincial requirements now exceed the wheat available in PASSCO reserves, prompting officials to explore imports as a precautionary measure.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers, maintaining stable wheat supplies, and coordinating closely with all provinces throughout the procurement and distribution process. Officials also directed relevant departments to complete the necessary arrangements efficiently to avoid disruptions in wheat availability.
