Nokia has announced that Cybernet, Pakistan’s leading fiber broadband provider, has chosen its state-of-the-art optical transport technology to build a new long-haul Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) network. This next-generation infrastructure is designed to deliver 1.2 terabits per second (Tbps) per wavelength and will power Cybernet’s national backbone, connecting over 25 cities in the initial deployment phase with more than 50 Tbps of total long-haul capacity.
The new network will support a range of services, including data center interconnects, enterprise and carrier networks, and Cybernet’s flagship consumer broadband offering, StormFiber.
To meet the rising demand for data, Cybernet is deploying Nokia’s 1830 GX platform integrated with 1.2T ICE7 coherent optics. The upgrade will enable high-speed, low-latency connectivity over resilient and diverse routes across the country.
Cybernet serves a wide range of customers across Pakistan—residential, corporate, and enterprise—as well as providing carrier and transit services to international telecom operators. The newly deployed infrastructure will also support cross-border transit for internet service providers and carriers in Central Asia, enhancing regional connectivity.
“By enhancing our network with cutting-edge technology, we’re able to keep pace with our customers’ rapidly evolving connectivity needs and deliver a superior end-user experience,” said Maroof Ali Shahani, Chief Operating Officer of Cybernet. “Nokia is a trusted technology leader with the expertise and innovation to support our modernization goals. The 1830 GX-based solution will form the foundation for high-capacity services connecting Pakistan—and the region—to the global digital economy.”
James Watt, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Optical Networks at Nokia, commented on the deployment: “Deploying state-of-the-art optical solutions ensures networks are not just keeping pace with, but even staying ahead in the race to meet surging bandwidth demands. As Cybernet prepares to modernize its network infrastructure, Nokia is proud to be helping transform Pakistan’s connectivity landscape with a 1.2T backbone, seamlessly interconnecting data centers, powering government networks, and delivering direct-to-home services.”
This deployment marks a major step in accelerating Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, positioning Cybernet to offer scalable and globally competitive services while meeting the country’s growing digital needs.
