Pakistan's Broadband Data Usage Hits Historic High in FY 2025, Underscoring Urgent Need for Infrastructure Expansion

Pakistan’s telecom sector has reached a historic milestone, recording an estimated 27,897 petabytes of broadband data consumption in FY 2025 through mobile and fixed broadband services. This unprecedented surge reflects the nation’s deepening digital transformation and increasing reliance on fast, reliable internet connectivity.

The exponential rise in data usage is seen as a clear indicator of Pakistan’s evolving digital landscape and underscores the critical need for sustained investment in broadband infrastructure. Digital connectivity now plays a central role in economic development, service delivery, and national inclusion efforts.

Recognizing this momentum, both the government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) have reiterated broadband’s strategic value in driving socioeconomic growth. As a key pillar of the ‘Digital Pakistan’ initiative, expanding broadband access is viewed as essential for modernizing the economy, improving governance, and bridging the digital divide across the country.

Since the rollout of 3G and 4G services in 2014, Pakistan’s broadband ecosystem has witnessed rapid evolution. PTA has been instrumental in enabling this growth through a series of targeted initiatives—ranging from spectrum auctions and renewals (2016–2021) to spectrum reframing and stricter rollout obligations for telecom operators. These interventions have accelerated 4G adoption and laid the groundwork for future-ready networks.

The results are evident in the surge in broadband subscriptions. From FY 2018 to March 2025, total subscriptions grew by 151%, climbing from 58.7 million to 147.2 million. This growth spans both mobile and fixed broadband users, highlighting robust demand across both urban and rural regions.

Pakistan’s broadband boom reflects a broader shift toward a more connected, empowered society. To maintain this momentum, sector stakeholders will need to prioritize infrastructure development, affordable access, and spectrum optimization—key enablers for sustaining inclusive digital progress in the years ahead.
