Prime Minister to Relaunch Rs. 40 Billion Sehat Sahulat Program on January 16, Restoring Universal Health Coverage

In a landmark move for the nation’s healthcare landscape, the Federal Government has officially announced that the Honourable Prime Minister will formally relaunch the Sehat Sahulat Program (SSP) on Friday, January 16, 2026. The announcement was made following the 34th meeting of the program’s National Steering Committee, chaired by Federal Minister for National Health Services, Syed Mustafa Kamal, which approved a revised financial outlay of approximately PKR 40 billion to fund the initiative through June 2027.

The revitalized program is designed to deliver Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by providing free, cashless hospitalization services to every permanent resident family across the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. This commitment directly fulfills the Prime Minister’s directive for the immediate restoration of this critical social safety net, aiming to protect millions of families from catastrophic healthcare expenses.

To ensure a seamless transition and uninterrupted service delivery, the Committee mandated the extension of existing operational contracts with State Life Insurance Corporation and NADRA. Furthermore, all outstanding liabilities of the program will be cleared through the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) as per the Prime Minister’s instructions, providing a clean financial slate for the relaunch.

“The relaunch of the Sehat Sahulat Program underlines our government’s unwavering commitment to the health and dignity of every citizen,” stated Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal. “We are strategically pivoting towards a modern health insurance model—focused on strategic purchasing rather than direct service management—to guarantee quality, efficiency, and sustainability in our healthcare delivery. This program is a cornerstone of our vision for a healthier, more resilient Pakistan.”

The program’s restoration marks a significant step in Pakistan’s journey toward achieving sustainable health equity and financial protection for its most vulnerable populations.
