PM Shehbaz Sharif Unveils Comprehensive Livestock Reform Agenda to Strengthen Pakistan’s Economy

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has unveiled an ambitious national reform agenda for the livestock sector, stating that agriculture and livestock possess the potential to significantly strengthen the national economy within a year through modern technology, scientific research, and coordinated federal and provincial efforts . Addressing the national seminar titled “Harnessing Pakistan’s Livestock Potential” after inaugurating the Pakistan Animal Identification and Traceability System (PAITS), the Prime Minister emphasized that Pakistan must now move beyond rhetoric and focus on practical implementation to unlock the sector’s true potential.

Pakistan possesses abundant natural resources, fertile land, ample water, and hardworking farmers, yet has failed to fully exploit its agricultural and livestock potential due to outdated production practices and inadequate value addition . The Prime Minister noted that although Pakistan is the world’s fourth-largest milk producer, the country continues to underperform in dairy and meat exports due to weak disease control mechanisms, inadequate traceability, and limited processing infrastructure . He stressed that improving livestock productivity, promoting modern farming practices, and enhancing value addition are essential to expanding exports, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening the national economy .
