Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plans to expand its fleet to 60 aircraft as part of its long-term growth strategy under its new private ownership, according to Arif Habib, Chairman of the Arif Habib-led consortium that acquired a majority stake in the national carrier. The expansion is aimed at strengthening domestic and international operations while improving service quality and operational efficiency.

Currently, PIA has 30 aircraft, with 18 operational and several others undergoing maintenance. The airline expects to restore additional grounded aircraft in the near term, increasing the operational fleet before introducing new aircraft in phases over the coming years.
The planned fleet expansion will support the launch of new routes, increase flight frequencies and improve connectivity across domestic and international destinations. Company officials believe a larger and modernised fleet will enhance operational reliability, strengthen passenger experience and improve the airline’s competitiveness in regional aviation markets.
The consortium has also outlined plans to invest in fleet modernisation, customer service enhancements, digital transformation and operational efficiency as part of PIA’s long-term turnaround strategy. These investments are expected to support sustainable growth while positioning the airline for future expansion.
Industry observers believe the proposed fleet expansion represents a significant milestone in PIA’s transformation and could play an important role in boosting tourism, trade and economic connectivity while restoring the airline’s position as a leading regional carrier.
