Steel Cutting Ceremony Marks Historic Start of PNSC's New 1,100-TEU Container Ship Project

A significant milestone for Pakistan’s maritime and economic sovereignty was achieved today as the steel-cutting ceremony for a new 1,100-TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) container ship was held at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW). The event, inaugurated by the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, officially launches the construction of this vessel for the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC).

This project marks a pivotal step in bolstering the nation’s maritime capabilities and is a direct reflection of the government’s strategic focus on reviving the domestic shipping and shipbuilding sectors. The vessel is being constructed entirely locally, utilizing indigenous expertise and resources at KSEW, which demonstrates the growing technical capacity of Pakistan’s industrial base.

Minister Chaudhry emphasized the critical strategic importance of the initiative, noting that nearly 95% of Pakistan’s international trade is conducted by sea. “This project is central to our National Maritime Policy and our broader economic objectives,” stated the Minister. “By adding this ship to the PNSC fleet, we will save vital foreign exchange by reducing freight payments to foreign carriers, while directly strengthening our control over national trade logistics.”

The domestically built ship is expected to enhance PNSC’s operational reach and competitiveness, providing greater support to importers and exporters amid global supply chain uncertainties. Furthermore, the project is anticipated to generate substantial skilled and semi-skilled employment, promote industrial development, and facilitate valuable technology transfer within the country’s shipbuilding ecosystem.

The government has reiterated its unwavering resolve to continue investing in the maritime sector to reduce overall logistics costs, improve trade efficiency, and advance Pakistan’s blue economy, ensuring long-term economic resilience and growth.
