ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN – In a historic move to achieve nationwide digital inclusion, the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) have entered a strategic partnership to deploy satellite-based internet services across Pakistan’s most remote and underserved regions. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in the government’s mission to ensure that every citizen, regardless of location, has access to reliable, high-speed connectivity.
The joint initiative will leverage SUPARCO’s expertise in space technology and satellite communication alongside NTC’s extensive terrestrial network and mandate to serve unserved areas. The primary focus will be on connecting far-flung communities, including mountainous terrains, desert areas, and off-grid villages, where the deployment of traditional fiber-optic or cellular infrastructure is not economically feasible or physically practical. This service will be a game-changer for education, telemedicine, e-governance, and economic development in these regions.
The partnership aims to provide affordable and reliable broadband internet, enabling digital services that have long been out of reach for these populations. This will empower local businesses, provide students with access to online educational resources, and allow healthcare workers to consult with specialists in urban centers. The project is a cornerstone of Pakistan’s broader “Digital Pakistan” vision and aligns with global efforts to eliminate the digital divide.
The Chairman of SUPARCO, emphasized the transformative potential of the collaboration, stating, “This partnership between SUPARCO and NTC is a giant leap for national connectivity. By harnessing space technology, we can overcome the geographical and infrastructural barriers that have left many of our citizens behind. This is about more than just internet access; it’s about delivering the full promise of the digital age to every corner of Pakistan, ensuring no one is left offline.”
The Managing Director of NTC, added, “Our mandate has always been to serve the unserved. This alliance with SUPARCO allows us to fulfill that mission in the most challenging terrains. Satellite internet is the key to unlocking the potential of these communities, and we are committed to making this service accessible and sustainable for all.”
The project is currently in its initial planning and deployment phase, with pilot programs expected to launch in selected remote districts in the coming months. This initiative positions Pakistan among a growing number of nations utilizing satellite technology to achieve universal digital inclusion.
