National Assembly Panel Demands Clear Timeline for PIA Privatisation Bidding Process

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Aviation has directed the Ministry of Aviation and Privatisation Commission to establish and present a definitive timeline for completing the bidding process of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), expressing concern over prolonged delays in the national carrier’s privatisation. The committee’s intervention underscores the growing urgency to conclude the strategic transaction and restore the airline’s operational and financial stability.

During a session convened to review PIA’s privatisation progress, committee members from across the political spectrum emphasised that the absence of a clear, actionable schedule has created uncertainty, adversely affecting the airline’s valuation, employee morale, and potential investor confidence. The panel has instructed relevant authorities to submit a phased plan detailing each step of the bidding process—from pre-qualification of investors to the final transaction signing—with specific deadlines for completion.

The committee also sought assurances that the process would remain transparent, competitive, and in compliance with all regulatory requirements. Members highlighted that further delays could exacerbate PIA’s financial losses, increase government liabilities, and diminish the airline’s appeal to credible international and local investors. The directive aims to instill discipline and accountability into a process critical to the country’s economic reform agenda.

Committee Chairman MNA Sheikh Aftab Ahmed stated, “The nation can no longer afford ambiguity regarding PIA’s future. We have asked for a week-by-week roadmap to ensure this process stays on track. A clear timeline is essential not only for parliamentary oversight but also to signal to potential investors that Pakistan is serious about completing this transaction efficiently and transparently.”

Officials from the Privatisation Commission briefed the committee on ongoing efforts, including the formation of transaction committees and engagements with prospective bidders. They assured the panel that all necessary steps are being taken to expedite the process while safeguarding the national interest and ensuring a fair valuation of the airline.

The committee’s firm stance reflects broader governmental and stakeholder consensus on the need to finalise PIA’s privatisation, a key condition of Pakistan’s ongoing agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and a pivotal element of the country’s broader economic stabilisation plan.
