Lahore’s Liberty Market Goes Cashless in Major Digital Payments Push

One of the city’s busiest commercial hubs, Liberty Market, has officially transitioned towards a cashless payment system through a collaboration between Zindigi and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), marking a significant step in Pakistan’s digital financial transformation.

The initiative introduces Raast QR-based payments, enabling merchants across the market to accept instant and secure digital transactions from any bank or mobile wallet. Customers can now use a simple “scan and pay” method, improving convenience while reducing reliance on cash.

This development aligns with the SBP’s broader vision to promote financial inclusion and accelerate the adoption of digital payments across the country. By digitising a high-traffic commercial area like Liberty Market, the project serves as a scalable model that can be replicated in other markets nationwide.

The move is expected to benefit both businesses and consumers by enhancing transaction speed, transparency and security, while also supporting the documentation of the economy. Merchants gain access to efficient payment solutions, while customers enjoy seamless and real-time payment experiences.

Officials and stakeholders from Zindigi, SBP and local administration highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in driving Pakistan’s transition towards a digital economy. The initiative reflects a growing commitment to modernising retail infrastructure and encouraging digital adoption at scale.

As Pakistan’s fintech ecosystem continues to evolve, efforts like this are expected to reduce cash dependency and pave the way for a more inclusive, efficient and transparent financial landscape.
